GEEBIZ is a project of Peace Child International, an organization which focuses on empowering youth to be the change they want to see in the world.
The Green Economy Eco-Business Innovation Challenge (GEEBIZ) was born, parallel to the Road to Rio+20 youth mobilization, out of a recognition that a platform which enabled young green entrepreneurs around the globe had yet to be implemented.
What is GEEBIZ?
In June 2012, leaders of the world's nations will gather in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development - 20 years on from the first Earth Summit - to review their progress on saving the planet's resources for future generations. They've made some advances, but not nearly enough. GEEBIZ challenges youth to step up and show them how it's done...
GEEBIZ is a way for young people to become part of the transition, and lead the way towards the green
economy.
• It is a showcase for young green entrepreneurs with business plans already in operation around the world.
• It is a competition for youth from all over the world to come up with innovative green
business plans.
We want to learn what business schools and colleges are doing to rise to this generation's challenge of building a green economy
What is the Green Economy?
For the purposes of the Green Economy Initiative, UNEP has developed a working definition of a green economy as "one that
results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities". Put
simply, a green economy can be thought of as being low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive.
Practically speaking, a green economy is one where growth in income and employment is driven by public and private investments that reduce carbon emissions and pollution, enhance energy and resource efficiency, and prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. These investments need to be catalyzed and supported by targeted public expenditure, policy reforms and regulation changes. This development path should maintain, enhance and, where necessary, rebuild
natural capital as a critical economic asset and source of public benefits, especially for poor people whose livelihoods and security depend strongly on nature.
What is the Green Economy Initiative?
The UNEP-led Green Economy Initiative, launched in late 2008, consists of several components whose collective overall objective is to provide the analysis and policy support for investing in green sectors and in greening environmentally unfriendly sectors.
Within UNEP, the Green Economy Initiative includes three sets of activities:
• Producing a Green Economy Report and related research materials, which will analyze the macroeconomic, sustainability, and poverty reduction implications of green investment in a range of sectors from renewable energy to sustainable agriculture and providing guidance on policies that can catalyze increased investment in these sectors.
• Providing advisory services on ways to move towards a green economy in specific countries.
• Engaging a wide range of research, non-governmental organizations, business and UN partners in implementing the Green Economy Initiative.
Beyond UNEP, the Green Economy Initiative is one of the nine UN-wide Joint Crisis Initiatives (JCI) launched by the UN System's Chief Executive Board in early 2009. In this context, the Initiative includes a wide range of research activities and capacity building events from more than 20 UN agencies including the Bretton Woods Institutions, as well as an Issue Management Group (IMG) on Green Economy, launched in Washington, DC, in March 2010.

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) is being organized in pursuance of General Assembly Resolution 64/236 (A/RES/64/236). The Conference will take place in Brazil on 4-6 June 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg. It is envisaged as a Conference at the highest possible level, including Heads of State and Government or other representatives. The Conference will result in a focused political document.
Sustainable development emphasizes a holistic, equitable and far-sighted approach to decision-making at all levels. It emphasizes not just strong economic performance but intergenerational equity. It rests on integration and a balanced consideration of social, economic and environmental goals and objectives in both public and private decision-making.
The concept of the green economy focuses primarily on the intersection between
environment and economy. This recalls the 1992 Rio Conference: the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.
It is vital that young people today understand the details of how to build a profitable, green, non-polluting company, whilst making a sustainable living from it. This, ideally, will aid them in giving back to their communities, thus empowering their societies.
We see the move towards the green economy in terms of poverty eradication and sustainable development, two aspects that have been critical in the development of our
project, GEEBIZ.

Our flagship product, Midomo, is an internationally award winning 3-in-1 water transport, purification and storage unit for developing world families living in water poverty. Using an internal filter system powered by the rotation of the wheels, Midomo transforms harmful water to drinkable water on the go. To use, a user simply rolls their Midomo to the nearest water source, fills its 50 litre tank, and rolls it home. Once home, the water drawn from the unit is safe to drink by World Health Organisation standards

Since 2005, the Yonso Project has been striving to alleviate rural poverty and provide lucrative environmentally sustainable employment opportunities to rural townspeople in the Ashanti region of Ghana. In 2009, we came together with bamboo and carbon fiber bicycle pioneer Craig Calfee to build a new product, one that would provide high-paying new jobs for the burgeoning rural youth population. Together, we have built the Yonbikes Workshop.
